A little note: before you read this story, it would be
helpful to read my other story, The New Kid. If
you don't want to read it before this, then good luck figuring out the
story plot.
.........."You put your books in alphabetical
order," exclaimed Adam. He was over at Liz's house helping her rearrange
her room and he had just noticed her bookshelf.
..........Liz giggled. "I put 'em by
color too. Sorry, I like to be neat."
..........Adam just shrugged off her reply
and once again began to arrange her desk, but soon was lost in his thoughts.
The two had become good friends ever since she was under Mondo's spell
but Adam liked her more than a friend. He just couldn't tell her.
.........."Liz, phone call," called
Mrs. Maxwell, breaking Adam's thoughts. Liz ran into the hallway to pick
up the phone. Adam continued working on the desk. He could hear Liz but
he didn't pay too much attention. Well, he didn't until he heard some sniffles.
.........."Right. Uh huh. Thanks. I guess
I'll see you next week."
..........Adam heard the phone click slowly
back into the holder and Liz walked back into the room. Her face looked
sad and as if she was going to cry. Adam immediately knew that something
was wrong. "What's wrong? Did something happen?"
..........She nodded back. "I think we've
done enough for today. We can finish the rest tomorrow."
.........."Liz, we've only been at this
for an hour. We can't stop now."
.........."Yes we can. Listen, something
really bad just happened and I don't feel like doing too much now, okay?"
.........."What happened? You can tell
me."
.........."You wouldn't understand."
.........."Yes I would. Please tell me."
..........Liz flopped down on her bed. She
wasn't sure if she could trust him but found herself spilling out the story.
"Back at Stone Canyon I only had one true friend. You know, Chris.
After you left he was still my best friend and always was." Tears
sprang to her eyes. "That was his mom on the phone. He had gotten
into a car accident. The funeral is next week." She held back from
crying the best she could but tears still rolled down her cheeks.
..........Adam felt like crying himself. It
was a wonder she hadn't broken down already. "I guess I'd better go
now." He figured that she would want to be alone. As he picked up
his forest green backpack the familiar sound of his communicator went off.
Liz stood up and stood next to him, ready for whatever Zordon would tell
them. "We read you Zordon. What's up?"
.........."Cogs are in the park. We still
do not know why but I'm sure Mondo is up to no good. The others are already
there."
.........."Right. Adam out." Adam
looked over at Liz. "You sure you're up to this?"
.........."Yeah. I'll make it."
..........Adam nodded. "It's Morphin
Time!" The two teens morphed and teleported to the spot in the park
where the cogs were.
.........."Glad you're here," said
Tommy, putting his hand on his friend's shoulder. "These cogs are
brutal."
..........The rangers got into fighting position.
They stood still for a few moments watching the cogs, and then ran up to
fight them. All was well until the others noticed that Liz wasn't fighting
as well as them. Adam knew she could do better and he had told the others
about how she had pinned him. But the cogs were getting the best of her.
..........Suddenly they all heard a scream.
The cogs had blasted her and she was lying almost lifeless on the ground.
"I'll take care of her," Adam yelled. They nodded back and began
to fight the cogs again the best they could.
..........Adam knelt down next to Liz. She
lay there unconsious. Her body was limp and Adam was sure that she was
hurt. "Don't worry," he whispered to her. "Everything will
be okay." He didn't believe his own words but he knew he couldn't
lose control. In a flash he teleported them both to the Power Chamber.
.........."Zordon..." Adam started
but was cut off by Zordon's booming voice.
.........."We are well aware the situation
Adam. It seems that even though her powers come from an ancient crystal,the
power is still mind controlled. Any disterbance can cause her powers to
weaken."
..........Adam looked over at Liz. She was
lying down on a coy near the control panel. She was so still it almost
made him cry.
.........."Don't worry," assured
Billy. "It was only a minor blow. She should come to in about an hour."
..........Soon the other rangers teleported
in. They all had looks of concern, although they didn't know her as well.
She was still their friend though. "How is she," asked Tommy.
.........."Okay," replied Billy.
"Listen guys. She'll be fine. I wouldn't get to worked up over this."
.........."So we can leave," asked
Rocky. Everyone looked at him. "What?"
.........."That was so insensitive,"
stated Kat.
.........."He is right though,"
said Billy. "There isn't much more you can do here."
..........Rocky stuck his tongue at Kat smiling
smugly.
.........."Okay," agreed Jason.
"But call us the minute you find something." In flashes of pink,
yellow, blue, red, and gold, they were gone. Only Adam remained.
.........."I'm staying," he said
stubbornly.
.........."Are you sure?" Adam nodded
and began helping Billy.
..........The other rangers were all sitting
at a table in the Youth Center sipping their drinks.They were talking about
Liz. "She is so strange," Rocky said aloud. The others all agreed
with him except for Kat. She believed that you shouldn't judge until you
know.
.........."I don't know. We all seem
strange at first becuse we aren't accustomed to our ways. We shouldn't
judge her like this."
.........."That's true," agreed
Tommy. "Maybe it's hard for her to adjust to the power. Zordon said
that almost all of her power is mental and any little upset can disable
her."
.........."But what could have happened
that made her powers fail," asked Tanya. No one answered. Liz was
very hard to get to know.
.........."I wonder if Adam knows,"
Jason thought aloud. "He seems to understand her the best."
.........."Hey! Didn't Adam teleport
with us," exclaimed Rocky. Everyone shrugged. As far as they knew
Adam was acting like he was more than a friend....
..........Billy typed some code words into
the Power Chamber's computer. He was trying to get Liz's health signs on
the viewing globe so he could work on the zords at the same time. "Adam,
you monitor her life signs. I'll try to see if Mondo is up to anything
yet."
..........Adam nodded back. He still hadn't
convinced himself that she would be okay even though everyone said so.
..........Liz felt pain in her forehead. She
had the worst headache in the world. Pain shot through her body as she
struggled to look around. It looked like the Power Chamber. She slowly
got up as the pain subsided.
..........Adam looked up at the viewing globe.
His eyes widened with fear. All life signs said zero,which meant that she
was dead. "Billy!" he cried. "It says she is dead. It can't
be, it just can't."
..........Billy didn't answer. It took all
his self control not to show too much emotion. He had learned a long time
ago before he had any friends. In a way he liked Liz. She was smart, fun,
and understanding. Mostly it was her understanding about being rejected.
That's why he was best friends with Adam. Billy bit his lower lip. Adam
liked Liz too.
..........Liz was standing directly behind
Adam and Billy. How strange can you get? Jeez,don't they even check
on me?
.........."What do we do," Adam
cried frantically.
..........Liz sighed and tapped him on the
shoulder. He waved her away. "Adam," she said.
.........."Not now Liz. You're in trouble."
Billy and Adam looked at each other and whirled around only to see Liz
shaking her head at them.
.........."You know, sometimes it amazes
me to know that you two are the brainiacs of this group."
..........Adam shoved her playfully. Billy
just gave out a sigh of relief.He never had gotten used to this playful
scaring.
..........Suddenly the alarm went off. "Ayiyiyiyai!"
cried Alpha. "Mondo has sent down the electroshock monster."
.........."Call the other rangers,"
boomed Zordon. "This is an emergency."
.........."Right," agreed Billy.
In a few seconds, all the rangers were at the Power Chamber, relieved that
Liz was okay.
.........."Rangers you must fight this
battle with caution. The electro-shock can electricute you harshly. Liz
I'm afraid you must sit this one out. Your mental state must be clear to
fight battles safely."
.........."Right," agreed Liz. She
turned towered the others. "Go on.I'll be fine."
.........."Okay," said Tommy, thinking
back to when he had been the Green Ranger. "It's morphin time!!!"
..........The rangers landed in the park and
began to fight a gruesome battle. Her lightning bolts seemed to come out
of nowhere.
.........."Zeo cannon now!" yelled
Tommy. The zeo cannon appeared and the rangers fired at the monster. It
destroyed him for only a second.
.........."Around and around and away
you go," said Klank. He threw Orbis at the electroshock. The rangers
looked a bit frightened at this.
.........."Super Zeo Zord power now!"
the rangers cried. They all jumped into the appropriate zord.
..........A fierce battle started. At first
it looked as if the electroshock was going to win, but like always the
rangers bounced back. With the super zeo zord saber, the monster was destroyed
and the rangers cheered. They had won.
Back at the Youth Center:
.........."I want to scream," groaned
Liz.
.........."Why," asked Billy. "Is
it becuse your powers will fail you at every little emotional upset?"
.........."No! Becuse I got a C on my
English test." The others laughed. It wasn't often someone outsmarted
Billy.
.........."Hey that reminds me Liz,"
said Tommy, "I tried to call you last night. You weren't home. Where
were you?"
.........."I went to see a friend,"
she answered as calmly as she could.
..........Adam could see a bit of hurt in
her eyes. He had promased her not to tell about Chris. It was just too
painful for her.
..........Liz felt Adam's hand glide onto
hers from under the table. It may not have been the best week but Adam
sure made it feel that way.
