There Goes

"Since I've met you...There's been something between us...More then friendship, I mean." Andros said, his gaze on the floor.

Carlos watched the scene, barely breathing. _I knew I shouldn't have gone with Cassie._ he thought, his heart heavy. _I know what's happening between them. We've all seen it it since that fateful day when we first met Andros._

Three months ago, Carlos knew he had lost Ashley as anything beyond a "good friend." When Ashley had gotten that look on her face as she had "inspected" Andros, he knew she would never be his.

Ashley smiled at Andros' shyness. "I've felt the same way."

"You have?" he asked looking at her in surprise.

"Yeah...Since we first met, I've felt an attraction for you..."

_Was it the same thing we had once?_ Carlos thought as he continued to watch them slow dance.

Like some black widow spider
You know just how to catch your prey
I'm actin' like it doesn't matter
And you sneak up from behind
and whisper my name

Carlos watched as they continued to talk and then kiss. He sighed. He hadn't thought he had been loud until he heard Andros' voice.

"Who's there?" Andros' voice demanded. Carlos cam out of the shadows and into the soft light from the dimmed lights.

"Carlos?!" Ashley demanded. "Why were you spying on us?"

"I wasn't spying." Carlos defended himself. "I had just come home early and thought I heard music so I came to look."

"Spying," Ashley stated. "Is when you stay hidden and not tell people you are there."

"I wasn't spying." Carlos repeated. He looked at Andros who seemed to be very uncomfortable. "I'll leave you two alone."

"No, Carlos, you don't have to go." Andros said. "I'll leave. I need to get some work done anyway." he smiled at Ashley and left.

"Explain." Ashley told Carlos.

"I'm sorry..." he said softly. "Can you forgive me?"

"Of course." Ashley said, flashing her 100-watt smile at him.

There goes your paralyzin' eyes

There go the games I wanted to play

"Good." was his response.

"Do you think we can practice tomorrow?" Ashley asked. "I think I need some more practice. The Quantrons were extra tough during our last battle."

"Sure." Carlos shrugged.

"Thank you." Ashley told him. "You know what?"

"What?"

"I think you're a great friend." she leaned up and kissed his cheek. "I'm going to go to sleep. Tell Cassie and T.J. good night for me."

"Sure. Good Night."

"Night."

Well I think you're playin' with me darlin'
You like to see what you can do
Well I should be fishin' for Blue Marlin
Instead of being hooked again by you

"Oh yeah, and Carlos?" Ashley said turning around.

"Yeah?"

"What we had had been real."

"Huh?" Carlos asked. He could tell she knew he was pretending because she came back into the room.

"What we had, back three months ago." Ashley said stepping closer to him. "It had been real, but like time, it doesn't stay around forever."

"I know." Carlos agreed as Ashley turned and walked out.

[A couple hours later]

"It was so much fun!" T.J. told Carlos. T.J. and Cassie had just returned form the mall, where they had caught the latest movie.

"I bet." Carlos said with a small smile.

"And I guess Cassie and Ashley planned for a double date between us..." T.J. went on.

"No, probably with you, Cassie, and Andros." Carlos corrected.

"What are you talking about?" T.J. asked concerned. "I thought you and Ashley were beginning to go out."

"Beginning is right. But it ended when I saw Andros and Ashley kissing."

"I'm sorry."

"So am I. But let's talk about it tomorrow. I'm so tired."

"Ok. Night."

Carlos nodded and crawled into his bed. Thinking about tomorrow's training session with Ashley, he fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.
