It took me a long time to find the right song to say what I wanted to for this fic. Many people have written and asked for a sequal to my popular featured fic Forgive me Love and here it is. The song is Never Saw Blue Like That by Shawn Colvin for the Runaway Bride soundtrack. As soon as I heard this song, I realized the real depth that it held and started writing. Thanks to all of you who wrote with your comments, and I hope that you like this one just as much. If you have not yet read Forgive Me Love, I suggest you do before going on. It isn’t very long and it will bring you up to speed.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I don’t own the Power Rangers, Shawn Colvin’s song, or the right to Runaway Bride (just to cover everything). I am not making a profit, if I was I wouldn’t be a poor college student living on Ramen Noodles and Easy Mac (I don’t own them either!)
Never Saw Blue Like That
by: Cricker
The shock of finding the letter was still trying to settle itself in Kimberly’s mind as she ran from his house. It was a bitter irony that only months earlier she had done the same to him, and she could imagine the cold knife that was buried in her abdomen had once been in his as well. Stopping, and falling to her knees, she could see that the sun was coming up, and the sun had almost reached the tips of the trees. She had been there almost all night, hoping that he was coming back. She wasn’t sure now if she was happy that he hadn’t or not.
"Kim?" she sucked in her breath deeply, but couldn’t get herself to turn. Ever since she had returned to Angel Grove the day before, she had avoided all of them. She knew that they could never understand why she had done what she had, because she didn’t know herself.
Today
"Want to talk?" he asked.
We took a walk
She smiled, and finally turned to face him. Billy extended his hand, and helped her to her feet. As soon as her hands felt his, her eyes teared up again.
Up the street
She let him lead her towards the park, neither of them saying a word. The sun was above the trees now, and she felt the warmth of it on her shoulders. She noticed how Billy was no longer wearing the blue tones that she had always seen him in, but he was in grays and darker hues. His broad shoulders were barely covered by the white tank top that he wore, and Kim tried to remember if he had looked like that before she had left.
You picked a flower
We climbed the hill above the lake
No he hadn’t. They had all been so protective of him only a few years ago, but like the rest of them he had grown and become more resourceful. If that was possible for Billy. He might not have had the muscles, but he had the brain to get them out of anything.
And secret thoughts
Were said aloud
"Kim," Billy finally spoke as they sat on the grass overlooking the park. She suddenly noticed how messy she must have looked, and ran her fingers through her hair. After a moment she stopped, and picked up the flower that Billy had given to her. It was a small daisy, and she stopped the urge to pick the petals off. "How long have you been back?"
"I flew in yesterday, but..." she twirled the stem in her hand, watching as the petals melted together in a blur. She wanted to tell him everything she had done. That she had waited all night in Tommy’s house, going through his stuff and wanting everything to be perfect again.
"I just got back a few days ago," Billy’s comment made her actually look into his eyes. There was a pain there that she couldn’t quite understand, something that made Kimberly shiver.
"Where did you go?" she remembered the letters from Adam, and the letter that told her that Billy was unable to accept the new powers. She had meant to talk to Billy when she returned with Jason, but she had been caught up in ranger business. All she could find out before she left again was that he had gone away, but no one had been willing to talk about it. Now as she sat with him, he also seemed almost unwilling to talk about it. She laid down and looked into the sky, and a moment later she giggled as he followed her and laid down in the opposite direction, with his head next to hers
"I wasn’t home," he sighed.
We watched the faces in the clouds
Till the clouds had blown away
"I know the feeling," Kim closed her eyes, and thought back on the past year.
And were we ever somewhere else
You know its hard to say
"I was on Aquitar Kim," his voice startled her, the only sound until then was their steady breathing and the wind through the trees. "I thought I was in love," she turned and for the first time she saw something.
And I never saw blue like that before
A single tear was rolling down his cheek.
Across the sky
A tear that stopped halfway down his cheek, and glistened in the sun.
Around the world
"It’s okay Billy, we don’t have to talk about it if you..."
You’ve given me all you had and more
"Shhh," the sound came softly from his mouth, and Kim watched him close his eyes and take a deep breath.
And no one else has ever shown me how
To see the world the way I see it now
When his eyes opened, he just stared into hers. It wasn’t an intruding stare, but one of deep concern and love. Kim found herself forgetting all that was around her, and becoming lost in the vastness of them.
Oh I
I never saw blue like that
"She made me believe that I was the only one, like I was important." Billy sighed and returned his gaze to the sky. "I decided to return as soon as I found out what was really going on."
"Was she cheating?"
"In a way. She had taken pity on me and my problems, and when I showed interest she didn’t stop it. It wasn’t until I asked her to marry me that she broke down and told me that she loved another."
"I’m so sorry Billy," Kim shifted onto her side, resting on her elbow.
"It’s ok," a smile played on his lips. "deep down I knew that I wasn’t destined to stay on Aquitar and marry Cestria. I had unfinished business here."
I can’t believe
A month ago I was alone
"I fell in lust with this guy," Kim finally admitted out loud. "I met him during the opening competitions, and he just swept me off my feet."
"And the letter?"
"I thought I was in love with this guy, and didn’t want to lead Tommy on." Kim remembered the weeks following the letter, when she was always surrounded by people but she felt utterly alone. Now, sitting with one of her oldest friends she felt a peace of mind that she hadn’t felt in a long time.
I didn’t know you
This stranger that had been there all along.
I hadn’t seen you or heard your name
And even now
Calm and patient.
I’m so amazed its like a dream its like a rainbow its like
Gentle and simple.
The rain
A gentle rain started falling, and Kim looked up into the sky. The clouds had accumulated faster than she had ever thought possible, and she let out a small squeal as the heavens let go with a downpour. Billy took her hand, and together they ran laughing through the park. They reached one of the covered picnic areas drenched to the skin.
And something’s are the way they are and words just can’t explain
But it didn’t matter.
Cause I never saw blue like that before
Across the sky
Around the world
Nothing did.
You’re giving me all you have and more
Kim wrung the water from her hair and watched it pool at her feet. She smiled gratefully as Billy draped his button up shirt over her shoulders and stood there in just his tank.
And no one else has ever shown me how
To see the world the way I see it now
Even with the gray skies and torrent rain, the two friends continued to talk. Kimberly finally told Billy where she had been, and waited for Billy’s face to register the disgust that she herself had been harboring for herself all day.
Oh I
Taking her hands in his, his face showed nothing but compassion. Thunder rumbled above them as they drew closer, their bodies for the first time meeting each other in a way other than friendship.
I never saw blue like that before
Their lips met with a softness that made Kims heart melt. She realized then that she too had returned home to take care of some unfinished business, but this was nothing she would have imagined in her wildest dreams.
And it feels like now, and it feels always and it feels like coming home
Home. A word she had never understood until now. A place where she was loved and protected. Where she could be herself and know that she wasn’t being judged.
I never saw blue like that before
across the sky
around the world
you’re giving me all you have and more
and no one else has ever shown me how
to see the world the way I see it now
Strong arms embraced her, and she laid her head on his chest.
Oh I
The rain was stopping.
I never saw blue like that before
But neither of them made a effort to move. Kimberly had found where she belonged.
Oh I
It had been there all along.
I never saw blue like that
