Note from the Author: Hi. I've been reading Power Ranger fanfics for quite a while, but have never felt the urge to write one until quite recently. It wasn't even my idea, really. The blam-er, credit...goes to my newly arrived muse, Domino the Space Griffin. If you're wondering how we met...read the below. I know this isn't a real Power Ranger fanfic, but I thought it would be nice to do this for Domino, and to see how people like my writing. I promise that a REAL Ranger fic series is going to be coming sometime over the next month or so, as Domino and I iron out the last few wrinkles in the plot, and start the true writing. Oh, and any muse-theories presented in here may bear no actual resemblence to any muses you may have. This is just what Domino told me.
Where Muses Come From
By Amber Slade
I almost giggled when I shut off the VCR and slid the rewound Turbo: A Power Rangers Adventure back into it's case. The four hundred and sixty-third viewing, and it had lost none of it's magic for me. I leaned back in my chair and let visions of Tommy Oliver, in all his green, white, and red glory, dance around in my head. Kim and Kat didn't know how lucky they were.
After a few moments of blissful dreaming, I flicked on my computer and decided to see what was going on in the wonderful world of online Power Ranger fanfics. "Like there are any other kind," I chuckled as I surfed around the various archives. Nothing new up just yet. It was still early in the day, so updates could come later on. I was hoping and wishing that there would be some new muse-fics up.
Yes, muse-fics. Fluff. Silliness. Questionable if they're actually Power Ranger fics or not. I personally didn't care. There was just something about reading over what the latest trials of muses vs. authors were that made me feel all squishy and giggly inside. I love a good, solid, serious fanfic as well, but a muse-fic, that's always good for a laugh.
I glanced down at my fingers on the keyboard, and I felt a strange sense of dread. Without even realizing it, I had opened a document and started typing down everything I was thinking. I was beginning to get a very strange feeling in the pit of my stomach. ..
"You know, most authors I've been sent to don't mind giving me a little credit every now and then," a slightly acidic voice spoke in my left ear. I didn't want to look. I didn't want this to be happening. In the words of Serena/Sailor Moon, I wanted to read Power Ranger muse-fics, I didn't want to live them! "Look at me, young lady! I refuse to be ignored by my new author!"
Slowly, I turned to look. Sitting on my left shoulder, wings tucked back neatly and a long cat-tail twitching at the very end, was a gold and silver griffin. The cat part was all soft golden fur, and the the eagle wings and head were pure silver, with a design across the face and eyes like a domino mask. It was only six inches tall, but it looked beautiful, regal...and as I realized what fate had just laid out for me, terrifying.
"Let me guess," I half-murmured. "You're a muse, aren't you?"
"You got it, girlie," it seemed permanently attached to my shoulder now as it looked over my room. "Nice place you've got here. I think I'm going to like it."
I turned my head as best I could to look at it's face. "Who are you and what gave anyone out there the bright idea that I need or want a muse?" all without my noticing it right then, my fingers were gallantly typing every last thing.
"Apollo," he shrugged. "You know, father of the muses? Well, the original nine anyway. When they retired, a lot of fantasy creatures like us got the job. We got together and started searching out people who needed us. We didn't need to be worshipped, we just wanted to inspire. Apollo keeps us in line, and sends us out whenever there's a new author who might need one."
I blinked several times. "That's not quite how I've heard it."
"Every muse tells it their own way," the griffin said. "Now, I believe you've got an original character to look at it?"
I was reaching for my notes on Melody Winthorp, the Black Turbo Ranger I had created, when I paused. "How did you know that?"
"I'm a muse," his beak gaped open in a grin. "It's my job to know these things. Hand those notes over, part of what I do is make certain she's no cookie cutter, identical to all the rest, original Ranger."
An eyebrow tilted. "Some things are going to be universal, you know."
"I know," he replied. "But the things that aren't are going to be what makes her stand out from all the rest."
I gave up. It was obvious fate, Apollo, God, or what have you (my religious beliefs are rather vague and all encompassing. ..I'd rather cover all the bases than leave anyone out) had decreed I was to become a Power Ranger fanfic author. Not that I minded, really. I'd been considering it for months now. I cracked my knuckles and started looking over Melody's vital statistics. Then something occured to me as the griffin's tail swished by my ear. "Aren't you even going to tell me your name?"
He, I could tell it was a he now, grinned again. "I'm Domino."
